“For I have given you an example that ye should do as I have done to you.”
John 13:15
The essence of who we are is our character. It defines how we act and react to
life’s circumstances. It is tested, refined and revealed during difficult times. This
revelation shows whether there is an understanding of our purpose in life, which
we constantly seek. The ultimate roadmap in this search is God’s word and the
answer is found in Jesus Christ, our example.
As humans, we desire to see an image of something before we can begin to
grasp the knowledge or understanding of its purpose. However, understanding
requires faith - that what is being sought will be revealed. And who is better to
reveal what is being sought than The Creator of all.
Christ is the eternal word of God who “became human being and lived among
and with us” to provide the image of what God looks like. He was sent to us for a
dual purpose – to reveal the character of God through His life and teaching and
to deal with the problem (sin) that hinders us from bringing deeper meaning into
our lives through His death and resurrection. While this problem will never be
eliminated, the final sacrifice of Christ provided purification once and for all. Now,
the problem (sin) that hinders people from finding deeper meaning (purpose) in
their lives has been dealt with forever. Once we open our hearts and receive the
gift of salvation, our purpose is assigned and the deeper meaning revealed. Our
challenge is to allow God the opportunity to complete the work and make us into
who He has purposed us to be. He has given us a living example of our
purpose – His son Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate image of God’s character.
Our Father is molding us to be more like Him. Our prayer should be for
patience, allowing God to work this process. We must always remember that
we are purposed by design. And it all begins and ends with the One in whom
our purpose was redeemed – Jesus Christ.
