This short story is told from the perspective of a 5 year-old who colorfully testifies to the
effects of domestic violence.
Nina Thomas is the smart, cute, protective, somewhat outgoing, daughter of Nicholas
Thomas, a weekend alcoholic and wife abuser. Associating major holidays and special
events in her life with the times "daddy hit Mommie", Nina echoes many of the same
questions asked by over 3 million children who are exposed to domestic violence in the U.S.
each year, especially “Does Mommie love daddy more than she loves herself?"
Nina’s escape is her grandfather - Poppy. He consoles her and is her constant comfort,
